The following is taken from a comment made by William Bennett on his radio show, Morning in America. In response to a caller espousing an anti-abortion stance, Bill Bennett, the former Reagan administration Secretary of Education replied, "...you wanted to reduce crime ... if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." He went on to state that, "aborting all African-American babies would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but the crime rate would go down."
This utter obscenity spoken without even the slightest hesitation exposes the true character of the ultra-right "christian" conservative movement in America. It is indicative of the moral corruption that has come to permeate American political life. It belies the hostility and base racist bigotry that lies very close to the surface in contemporary American life.
It is enough to make me come close to the abyss of despair regarding this country and its real values. It is like the proverbial last straw. A succession of events since the insertion of George W. Bush into the presidency including the Iraq War, the usurpation of the Federal Government by corporate interests, the refusal to sign the Kyoto Treaty, the utter disdain forInternational Law, the incursion of fanatical religious beliefs into the nation’s public schools and, finally, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina leave me with no alternative but to conclude that this society is quickly approaching the loss of any remaining vestige of a moral compass.
It is time to weep and begin to mourn the death of a nation.
